Travel League Information

The GAL Travel teams offer girls the opportunity to extend their skills and compete against teams outside the GAL league. Girls participate in games within the River Valley Softball League and tournaments in the Minnesota USSSA leagues.
GAL Travel Softball is open to all girls ages 15-19 who are registered for the GAL House program.

To provide an environment where girls can reach their full softball potential, participate on a competitive team, have fun, and build a strong sense of teamwork, sportsmanship, self-discipline and respect.

The GAL Travel League follows the age divisions established by the USSSA Softball Leagues. All age divisions are based on date of birth, not school year. Players qualify for age divisions based on their age on January 1. For 2016, the age cutoffs are as follows:

Age Division Cut Off Birth Years Within Age Group
U16 Must not turn 17 prior to Jan 1, 2016 2000-2001
U19 Must not turn 19 prior to Jan 1, 2016 1997, 1998, 1999

The Travel season begins with practices in late April or early May. Games and tournaments begin in May or June and run through the end of July.

Girls are placed on teams based on age division and skill. If the number of girls registered in an age group exceeds the maximum number for a team, tryouts will be held. If there are enough girls for two teams, an A and B team will be formed for the age division. If there are too few players for two teams, tryouts will determine which girls make the team. Requests to play in an upper age division will not be considered except in rare instances when the move is in the best interest of the league (ie more girls are able to play, improves competitiveness of all teams, etc).

Practices are scheduled at the discretion of the coach. Most teams will practice at least once per week prior to the season start and may or may not continue practice once per week once games begin. Regular season games are held on Wednesday evenings. Most games are double headers.

Tournaments are held on various Saturdays and Sundays in May, June and July.

Tournaments for 2017 have not been set yet, however this is an approximate schedule:

  • Coon Rapids: Mid-May
  • Richfield: Early June
  • Golden Valley: Late June
  • USSSA State: 2nd week of July
  • Burnsville Midwest Invitational: Late-July

There are also several tournaments in South Dakota; if the team decides to attend GAL will cover entry fees but not travel expenses.

Like our in-house teams, parent volunteers coach our travel teams. The Travel Program emphasizes effort, good sportsmanship and teamwork while offering a more competitive level of play than in the house league. If you are interested in coaching a travel team, please contact us.

The fee for the 2017 season is $175. If you're new to GAL you can sign up for our email list and get our newsletters with all the 2017 season information. The Travel fee is in addition to the House League fee. Uniforms consisting of a shirt, shorts and socks are provided to all players.

Families with multiple players receive discounts, as follows:

   1st Player 100%
   2nd Player 75%
   3rd Player 50%
   4th Player Free!

Home games will be played at the Optimist field. Away games will be in various metro area communities, such as Burnsville, Richfield, Boomington, and others. Practices are held at the coach's discretion, usually at Optimist field.

Tournaments are usually held in metro locations such as Champlin, Burnsville, Richfield, Andover, Coon Rapids and Golden Valley. The vast majority of games are held within the Twin Cities metro area, but some teams may attend a tournament that requires more travel.

Players are responsible for their own transportation to and from all games and tournaments. Carpooling is encouraged. If you are concerned about your ability to get to a game, contact your coach to see if a ride can be arranged.
